Earth Hour 2008

Earth Hour 2008

Tomorrow, March 29, 2008 from 8 to 9 pm is Earth Hour. Earth Hour in an event where millions of people around the world will make a statement about climate change by turning off their lights for one hour. Earth Hour was created by the World Wildlife Fund in Sydney, Australia in 2007. In one year it has grown to more than 200 cities around the globe, including 100 cities in North America.

Unfortunately, I only just heard about this event through a mass mailing from the World Wildlife Fund’s Earth Hour. I have already signed up on the Earth Hour website. There’s no Earth Hour event in my home town of San Jose, CA, but maybe I can help organize one for next year…

Good Friday (for Falcons)

Clara in flightWell, it looks like there’s four eggs in the nest box now. One more than last year. I guess Clara and Carlos are going to have a busy time feeding 4 chicks. I’m looking forward to a nest full of fuzzy young peregrines later this spring. The picture on the left is one I took of Clara a couple of weeks ago.

I didn’t make it to the falcon presentation at the library. Mary and I had gone hiking in the Marin Headlands with some friends. Afterwards we had lunch at a Brazilian restaurant in San Francisco. We did stop by the library on Sunday to see the photo exhibit. There are some really nice shots there, and mine doesn’t look too bad.

I’m still working on the Clean Tech company, but I haven’t updated my green blog in a while. I’ve been pretty busy putting together a demo version of the user interface for our energy management product. I’m learning a lot about AJAX web structure and have been using a JavaScript toolkit called Dojo. It’s pretty interesting. Maybe I’ll blog about it in more detail one of these days.

Early Easter Egg

Clara’s Easter EggWe got an early Easter egg in San Jose. Yesterday, Clara, the female peregrine resident of San Jose City Hall, laid her first egg of 2008. I hope this is the first of a nice, healthy clutch for Clara and Carlos. If you want to follow their progress, check out the Santa Cruz Predatory Bird Research Group’s Nest Cam.

In related news, Glenn Stewart of the SCPBRG will be giving a presentation on falcon recovery at the San Jose Library. Glenn may have a captive, educational falcon with him for the discussion. After the presentation, check out the falcon photo exhibit on the 4th Floor of the library. One of my photos will be on display along with others from local professional and amateur photographers. The photo exhibit should run for a couple months. There is also a scope on the 8th Floor for viewing the City Hall peregrines.
